Chapter 17

Siobhan Duffy stood in the store beside Kylie, carefully picking clothes off the rack.

‘Think she’ll be on time? She’s got another, what, two minutes to be here.’

‘She said midday, Kylie. She’s not going to be spot-on, is she? Especially if she’s got someone with her. You’ve got to give her some leeway here. She might not have been able to get out on time. You don’t know what pressure she’s under. You don’t know what else she’s doing, okay? Just chill, Kylie. Goodness’ sake!’

‘Chill? You just told me to chill. When did you learn to chill? When was that word part of your vocabulary?’

‘Let me remind you, this is the boss,’ said Siobhan. ‘Anyway, what do you think of this top?’ Siobhan looked over.

Coyly, Kylie looked at Siobhan. ‘I think it’s too young for you.’

‘Do you prepare all the barbs yourself?’ asked Siobhan.

She looked up, and saw Emma entering the shop. Zanoo’s was busy, but Emma wasn’t difficult to pick out from the crowd, mainly because of the rather large man who came in with her. Siobhan clocked him as the man from the other night and retreated behind a stylish set of dresses.

‘He can’t see me,’ she said to Kylie. ‘You’re going to have to make contact with her. Tell her where to go. We’re going to want her to try on some clothes because he can’t go in there. Not with the number of women about. But you’ll need to speak to her.’

‘How do I do that?’

‘See what rail she goes for. Pick something up and drop it. Hopefully, she’ll come down to help you. And just say to her, “Siobhan, changing room, now.” That’s all you have to say. Whisper it. Make sure he doesn’t hear.’

‘And if he does.’

‘Get out quick,’ said Siobhan. ‘I’ll be watching from a distance in case things go very south. But don’t let them. We need to talk to this woman.’

Kylie nodded, then disappeared off into the shop. Siobhan watched her from behind the dresses and smiled. Kylie didn’t make a beeline for Emma, instead moving subtly around different racks, looking at them.

When Emma made her way into the lingerie section, Kylie followed her in. Siobhan observed the man standing behind her. He had been a thug last night but, like all men, he seemed uncomfortable in the lingerie section. Was it a thing with men that they were worried they were going to get called out, be accused of being some sort of pervert because of where they were standing?

She smiled to herself, for Kylie used the opportunity as the man looked away, lifting a bra off the rack in front of Emma. Kylie leaned in quickly and delivered the message. She then put the bra back and moved along, lifting several others out, popping a few into a basket and then disappearing off with them.

Siobhan then watched Emma, who moved away from the lingerie section to a rack of tops. She picked them up, put them across her and asked her companion whether they fitted.
